I mentioned a while back that I sort of came up with a new submission. Well I finally made a video for it. As a side note, you won't be able to triangle your legs all the way unless your opponent is very small. Child small. It works great to babysit kids with..

Nice one Preston, I've never seen it before. Looks sore though heehee. I'll have to give it a wee try. Not sure if I'm flexible enough for it or my legs are long enough. Ill report back after I've rolled tonight. I love the name - classic! :D

I talked to my instructor about this move tonight. I showed it to him and he started smiling. First comments on it were, if you have a full nelson why would you bother throwing your legs up, just put the full nelson on.
I guess he said Eddie pulled this off in a tournament, but they waved it off as a full nelson. He didn't get DQ'ed but I guess they passed it on to Carlson JR, or Carlos JR (I can't remember who he said) and a few others. In other words they let him have the win cuz he got the sub, but they pretty much said nobody else can do it again.
I'm sure Ari could find out better than me. But my instructor has rolled with Eddie before, and likes him pretty well.

You can't full nelson in BJJ tourneys?

The BJJ rule sets have been changing for years. Each organization will allow different things. I can tell you that the full nelson and quarter hold are a staple in wrestling. Not sure why you would make these moves illegal. Anything can be considered a neck crank I suppose. Heck, wasn't the IBJJF that said standing guillotines are not illegal because of the neck pressure?

The sad part about prohibiting certain techniques (that are allegedly dangerous) is that it will actually hamper development in certain areas. I see it all the time, especially with leg locks.
Last year one of my Blue Belts (who is now a Purple Belt, largely because of this incident) was told he could not reap the knee (from inside some ones guard, usually from bottom it illegal, not from the top) to go for leg locks in the intermediate division (2-5 years) in this specific organization.
So after a brief conversation we bumped him up to advanced. Ironically my Blue Belt submitted not only 2 purple belts but also the black belt that is this organizations head (that went over the rules) to take first place (this was also a no time limit, submission only tournament), using leg locks via reaping the knee.
If you allow tournament rules to define how you train, you could be stunting your development.

Sorry Tall didn't mean to hijack your thread.
Ari posted a regarding a topic that irritates the hell out of me. Ignorance is no excuse for making a technique illegal, safety is. Education is required not prohibition.

We've talked about this in other threads (scissor take down in judo, double/single in judo, the standing guillotine in BJJ). What you will find is that the art will venture into another direction and become a subset of what it was. This in fact does Jiu Jitsu even more harm because it bolsters the other other arts that can claim "come learn leg locks from the sambo specialists or throws from the judo guys."
What is happening (and it is happening) is that some techniques are being bread out of the system because BJJ has taken such a SPORT turn in the last 15 years.

Full nelsons are mostly illegal in wrestling also. Halfs and power halfs are legal. In SOME divisions you can do a full from the side as along as you do not apply downward pressure on the neck.
..... Well in WWE you can do anything including bashing people with folding steel chairs. Now that is Wrestling!

One of my fellow bouncers grabbed a guy one time that was being belligerent and put him in a full nelson. The guy tried to kick my bouncer in the balls with his heel so he slammed the guys face into a stair handle. I have never seen blood explode out of someone like that. I do not agree with the level of force the bouncer chose but I can at least vouch for the effectiveness of a full nelson.
Now you don't have to feel bad Chris because I hijacked my own thread. :)
